Will Casper Ruud get the win? Will Holger Rune pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have one of the best clay courters in the game taking on a young star coming off of a massive win. Who will triumph and move on to the semifinals at the 2022 French Open?
Casper Ruud took down Hubert Hurkacz in a convincing victory to become the first ever Norwegian to reach the quarterfinals of the French Open. His opponent will be a tough one, but Ruud will breathe a sigh of relief that he is the favorite going into this one, which we didn’t think would be the case with his other possible opponent being very likely to move through. Rune plays a good game, but is he physically and mentally ready to grind it out with one of the best and most consistent clay courters in the game deep into a major? My guess is not yet, and I think we’ll be seeing Ruud move through to his very first major semifinal at the 2022 French Open.
Holger Rune pulled off not just the upset of the tournament, but the win of his career, taking down Stefanos Tsitsipas who was the heavy favorite to go through to the final from the bottom half of the draw. It’s an all Scandinavian quarter final as he faces Casper Ruud, the World No. 8 and favorite to move through to the semifinals. The game of Rune will definitely be able to grind with Ruud, but I doubt that he can create enough aggressive opportunities to ultimately deal with the clay court prowess of Ruud at the 2022 French Open.
Casper Ruud and Holger Rune have met 3 times before, with Casper Ruud leading the head to head 3-0. Their 3 meetings have all come on clay, and Rune has failed to win one set, with Ruud cruising through the first two meetings. Their latest meeting in Monte-Carlo though, well, it was a very close straight setter. Ruud wasn’t playing too well that tournament, but could it be a sign of potential trouble for Ruud? I expect a good fight, there will be plenty of rallies and some brilliant clay court tennis to appreciate, but with Ruud’s experience and more natural aggression on the surface, I expect him to power past Holger Rune and book his spot in a career-first major semifinal at the 2022 French Open.
