TennisSection previews the 2021 ATP Finals as Daniil Medvedev takes on Alexander Zverev in the Final on Sunday November 21st, 2021.
Will Daniil Medvedev become the first title defender at this event in 5 years Will Alexander Zverev follow up his incredible win with a 2nd ATP Finals title? This will be an interesting one, where we have two of the best players in the world in a tight matchup. Who will win the 2021 ATP Finals?
Daniil Medvedev got an excellent win over Casper Ruud, easily dominating him in straights 6-4 6-2. He served incredibly well, not only utilizing his groundstrokes to win the long rallies and play defense, but also being able to use them for offense when needed. The main factor for him here will be the way that he deals with his first serve returns. The main reason Alexander Zverev pulled off the upset against Djokovic was his incredible serving, so if Medvedev can neutralize that as he’s been able to do in the past, then he should be able to edge out his rival. It will be a very tight one, but assuming Medvedev continues his level, he is the favorite based on their recent meetings, the conditions, and the amount of rest and seemingly their respective levels. Let’s see if he can defend his title here at the 2021 ATP Finals.
Alexander Zverev pulled off an absolutely unbelievable win against World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. And after all that, he still has to deal with Daniil Medvedev, the favorite for the title. In order to beat him, he will have to be perfect on serve as he was today, as well as focusing on playing aggressively without error. Medvedev has been defending unbelievably well, as well as rallying incredibly well. If Zverev tries to elongate the rallies, he will lose as he did in Paris and this week. He’s lost the last 5 meetings to him in the last 2 years, it’s just not a great matchup for him and if he wants to turn it around he will need to play aggressively throughout and take care of his first serve to pull off the slight upset and lift the title at the 2021 ATP Finals.
Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev have met 11 times before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 6-5. It’s a slightly misleading head to head, as Zverev dominated it earlier in their careers, but Medvedev has completely turned it around to go 5-0 since the 2019 version of this event. Medvedev has been playing unbelievable stuff, and with more rest and the record against Zverev, including a win over him this week it’s hard to go against him. Zverev has a shot but his mentality against Medvedev just isn’t as good as he’d like for it to be. I’m expecting it to be an absolute blockbuster of a match, but with the way that Medvedev has been playing along with the tight win he got over him in the groups will be key, he will have adapted well and he will know exactly what to do to edge out his rival and defend his title at the 2021 ATP Finals.
