A fascinating match is expected here in the First Round of the 2021 Lyon Open, as two of the most exciting young players in world tennis collide. Seventh seeded Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime will face unseeded Lorenzo Musetti of Italy in a match that is sure to have lots of flashy shot making. This is not one that tennis fans will want to miss, who will advance to the Second Round here in Lyon?
Felix Auger-Aliassime is currently ranked #19 in the ATP world rankings and is the seventh seed here at the 2021 Lyon Open. FAA has long been considered a future star of the men’s game and has finally been living up to that promise with some strong results over the past few years. He has been to an impressive seven ATP Finals at the tender age of 20, however has surprisingly not been able to win any of them. The young Canadian has been having a mixed start to his clay court season so far, with a Quarter-Final run in Barcelona being the highlight. His powerful baseline game has not always translated well to this surface but he moves very well, and has been slowly improving and becoming more comfortable on clay. While he enters this match against Lorenzo Musetti as the favorite, he would be wise to not underestimate this budding young star of the game.
Lorenzo Musetti is ranked #88 in the ATP world rankings, and is yet another young Italian prodigy that is making a mark on the world scene. He had his breakthrough last year in Rome, defeating Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori en route to the Round of 16. The young Italian has been having yet another strong season so far, making it to the Semi-Finals in Acapulco. One thing missing from his performances has been consistency, and as he continues to mature as a player you can expect that to improve as well. The youngster has a huge game and is very comfortably on the clay courts, making him an extremely difficult opponent. He enters this match against Felix Auger-Aliassime as the underdog, but should not be taken lightly as he has shown time and time again that he never backs down from a challenge. Musetti will be backing himself to cause the upset here at the 2021 Lyon Open.
This will be the second meeting between the two players, with Auger-Aliassime leading the head to head series 1-0. They played each other in Barcelona on clay, with the Canadian winning in three sets. This is set to be yet another close and exciting match, with Felix-Auger Aliassime the obvious favorite due to his superior experience and ranking. However, the young Italian Lorenzo Musetti has shown that he has a big game and is fully capable of defeating the big guns. Despite this, I am backing FAA to get the win here. At this stage in their careers he has just a bit too much quality for Musetti and should be able to come away with a hard-fought win here at the 2021 Lyon Open. Expect the Canadian to win in three sets here, advancing to the Second Round.
