TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Roger Federer (8) meets Matteo Berrettini (9) in the Round of 16 on Monday, June 7th 2021.
Will Roger Federer be able to get another strong win under his belt in his comeback season as he aims to get himself in even better form? Will Matteo Berrettini get his first win against one of the members of the Big 3 as he looks to book a Quarter-final against a most likely opponent in Novak Djokovic? Both players have played some strong tennis here at Roland Garros, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-finals of the 2021 French Open. Who will it be?
Matteo Berrettini beat Soonwoo Kwon in the Round of 32 in 3 sets 7-6/6-3/6-4. The match was very tight, even though the scoreline might not say so, with Berrettini not being able to dominate as much as he would have liked. But at the end of the day, Matteo Berrettini got the win under his belt in straight sets, and that is all that matters. Matteo will now want his big serve and big forehand game to be at its best as he is going to meet Roger Federer in the Round of 16 here at Roland Garros, and he will want to get his first win against a member of the Big 3. Can the Italian do it?
Roger Federer came through a very tight match against the very in form Dominik Koepfer, beating the German in 4 sets 7-6/6-7/7-6/7-5. Roger Federer started out well, and was even a break up in the second set, however the fight of Koepfer was able to get himself back into the match. This, matched with the fact that there was no crowd, and we all know how Roger feeds on the crowds energy, led to the match being quite tight. Roger Federer will have wanted to play better during that match, and he knows he should have, but he will take some positives as well in the fact that he has been able to make it so far already here at the 2021 French Open, and he will definitely use this momentum going into the grass court season whether he wins or loses against Matteo Berrettini.
Roger Federer and Matteo Berrettini have met 2 times before, with Roger Federer leading the head to head 2-0. They last met a couple years ago at the ATP Finals where Federer won in straight sets. Already their previous meeting was actually somewhat tight, with a few points here and there really resulting in the outcome, and unfortunately for millions of tennis fans around the world, I don’t see Roger coming out on top here. If Roger Federer had managed to win that match against Koepfer in straight sets, or even in a more dominant scoreline fashion in 4 sets, potentially I could see him winning. However, this match showed the missing aspects in Federer’s game, especially with him not timing the ball to perfection. The power of Berrettini will be too much for Federer, just for now. I am sure on grass Federer will be much better.
