Will Casper Ruud get the win? Will Hubert Hurkacz pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have a very tight matchup between two players at the very top where it’s anyone’s game. Who will triumph and move on to the quarterfinals at the 2022 French Open?
Casper Ruud had to fight hard, harder than expected to get past Sonego in 5 sets. Going straight to Hubert Hurkacz is no easy task, but he’s still the favorite as not just a top 10 player, but even higher than that when it comes to clay. Hurkacz is a player who can really rip through the ball and prefers a much quicker court, Ruud can grind a lot better than Hurkacz, so in the tough moments and using that incredible forehand of his, I expect him to be able to overpower Hurkacz from the back of the court as he looks to make his very first major quarterfinal at the 2022 French Open.
Hubert Hurkacz has been playing some great tennis, who, unlike Casper Ruud, really hasn’t been struggling. He hasn’t had to beat a top guy on the clay though as of yet, and Ruud is certainly that guy. Ruud can grind really well from the back of the court, with a risky game like that of Hurkacz, it may prove too difficult to penetrate the defensive brilliance of Ruud on the red clay of the 2022 French Open.
Casper Ruud and Hubert Hurkacz never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s an interesting matchup with two very different playstyles. For Hurkacz, he’ll need to focus on playing first strike tennis. I think it’s a lot more difficult to do against this opponent on this court, but it’ll be his gameplan. For Ruud, he’ll just need to set up the forehand and draw errors from the Hurkacz game, which I feel is all too likely to happen in this match. It’ll be a battle though, as Hurkacz still has some incredible weapons and Ruud will be tired, let’s see what the two can do as they clash for a place in the quarterfinals at the 2022 French Open.
