TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Alejandro Davidovich Fokina meets Federico Delbonis in the Round of 16 on Sunday June 5th, 2021.
A very exciting yet surprising matchup awaits us here at the 2021 French Open, as Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain will meet Argentinian Federico Delbonis in the Round of 16. Both men are unseeded here at Roland Garros and have upset higher ranked players to reach this stage, but are fully deserving of being here. Who will win and advance to the Quarter-Finals here for the first time in their careers?
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is currently ranked #46 in the ATP world rankings and is unseeded here at the 2021 French Open. The young Spaniard has turned heads in recent times with his flashy performances, and has started strongly here at Roland Garros. The highlight of his campaign so far was a five set victory over fifteenth seed Casper Ruud. That was a huge victory for Davidovich Fokina as Ruud was one of the in-form clay court players this season, and had reached two Masters-1000 Semi-Finals on the surface. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina enters this match against Federico Delbonis as the favorite, but they are very close in the rankings and his opponent is very highly experienced. The only concern with the Spaniard is if fatigue will be a factor, as he has spent a lot of time on court so far here at Roland Garros 2021, including two five set matches.
Federico Delbonis is ranked #51 in the world and like his opponent Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is unseeded here at the French Open. The Argentine has been in fantastic form so far here at Roland Garros, with impressive wins over Radu Albot, Pablo Andujar and Fabio Fognini. The last two wins were particularly impressive, due to Fognini’s ranking and the fact that Andujar had earlier defeated Dominic Thiem. Delbonis is a very solid lefty, with a huge forehand. A two time clay court tournament winner on the ATP Tour, he has bags of experience and is enjoying a career year in 2021, reaching the Quarter-Finals at a Masters-1000 event for the first time in Rome. While he enters this match as the slight underdog, he has spent less time on court than his opponent and is much more experienced, setting the stage for a ferocious battle here at Roland Garros 2021.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and it is definitely going to be a very close and interesting battle. Both men have been having outstanding clay court seasons and are very close in the rankings, so this is a match that will likely go the distance here at Roland Garros 2021. Neither Alejandro Davidovich Fokina nor Federico Delbonis have reached a Quarter-Final at a major before, so they have added incentive here. I expect this to be a very close match, and I am giving the edge to the young Spaniard. He has more firepower than his Argentine opponent and a bit more variety in his game. Both men will almost certainly win a set so that is a safe pick, but I am going with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to get the win here, advancing to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 French Open.
