Cristian Garin has not been able to showcase his clay-court prowess in the past few months, but he has gotten sharper since making the Rome quarterfinals two weeks ago. The Chilean was dominant in his four-set win over Tommy Paul in the first-round of the French Open. After dropping the first set 7-5 against the run of play, Garin was almost flawless in the next three sets as he completed the comeback. He broke Paul nine times from 18 opportunities. The 25-year-old memorably reached the second week last season, could he be on course to do so again?
Ilya Ivashka, for his part, overcame a third-set wobble to see off the unpredictable Benoit Paire in the first round at the French Open. The Belarusian was poised to advance with little resistance after establishing a two-sets-to-love lead. But the crowd breathed new life into Paire who channeled that energy into his game to cruise in the third set. But that momentum shift was short-lived as Ivashka maximized on his strengths and opportunities to complete the win.
Cristian Garin and Ilya Ivashka have not clashed on the ATP Tour. It will be their first official meeting when they lock horns at the French Open. Garin has a sizable advantage as the clay suits his game. His counterpunching skills make him so tough to beat and his weight of shot is generally more consistent than on other surfaces. Ivashka should make things close owing to his big serve and penetrating ground strokes. But if the Chilean brings his A-game to the table, he should be the favorite to advance into the third round.
