Will Casper Ruud win his first masters title and assert himself as a player to beat on the hard courts? Will Carlos Alcaraz become the youngest champion in Miami Open history? This will be a fascinating one, where we have a sort of unexpected final, but two great players who are sure to give us some grueling rallies. Who will triumph and claim the championship at the Miami Open 2022?
Casper Ruud got a solid win today to take down the young Argentine in Francisco Cerundolo 6-4 6-1. He didn’t play his best tennis, but nevertheless made the final and will have some confidence going in, being the higher ranked player of the two. Carlos Alcaraz will be his toughest opponent yet. Although he took down Zverev, Alcaraz is in incredible form, just playing ridiculous tennis from the entire court. Ruud will need to play really aggressively and hope that Alcaraz gives him a little bit of help with the occasional error, which is unlikely to happen. Ruud definitely has the title within his reach, but it will be a very daunting task as he aims to become the first ever Norwegian to lift a masters series title at the Miami Open 2022.
Carlos Alcaraz took down the defending champion in Hubert Hurkacz 7-6 (5) 7-6 (2) to book a battle in the final coming up against Casper Ruud. Although the rankings would beg to differ, Alcaraz is probably the slight favorite coming into this one. The title is all but his though, as he has to fight hard against the consistency and aggression of Ruud, especially on that forehand wing. I think Alcaraz has a good edge on Ruud with the backhand to backhand exchange, and while both have world class forehands, Alcaraz may want to avoid that exchange as Ruud is very experienced with ripping those heavy and explosive forehands, while Alcaraz would probably prefer to have the ball kept a little lower. It will be a tough match, but Alcaraz is looking to be in supreme form this week as he aims to make a historic achievement and become the Miami Open 2022 champion.
Casper Ruud and Carlos Alcaraz have met once before, with Carlos Alcaraz leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came last year on the clay, with Alcaraz winning in straight sets. This was before both players were too good, but it still goes to show that Alcaraz has the game to defeat Ruud. Anything can happen, both players will be affected by the occasion, and it will ultimately come down to who can be more aggressive in the tightest moments. Will experience prevail? Will youth prevail? We’ll have to wait until the championship round on Sunday as the two of the best players in the world will battle for the trophy at the Miami Open 2022.
