This will be a fascinating one, where we have an already established top 10 player making his move on the hard courts taking on an unexpected but very talented young semifinalist. Who will triumph and move on to the semifinals at the Miami Open 2022?
Casper Ruud got a great win, pulling off the upset on the 2nd seed in Alexander Zverev to further establish himself as a guy to beat even on the hard courts. He has an excellent opportunity here to reach his first masters 1000 final as he takes on Francisco Cerundolo, a match where he is no doubt the clear favorite. It’s also a good matchup for him, on top of the fact that Ruud will be far more accustomed to the occasion as well as obviously having many results on the ATP Tour already. Cerundolo is rather defensive though, and you need to really play big to take out Ruud, and Cerundolo also definitely lucked out a little having come through a sub-par Monfils and Tiafoe and obviously the situation today with Sinner. Let’s see if Ruud can meet expectations to book a spot in his very first masters 1000 final at the Miami Open 2022.
Francisco Cerundolo has made the semifinals in his debut at a masters series event, becoming the first man to do so since 2012. It’s a stunning achievement for sure, but we cannot ignore the series of events and level of play that lead him to this milestone. If we step back and look at it all, Ruud is still the clear favorite, especially considering the fact that he took out Zverev. I think Cerundolo can do a little bit of damage if Ruud is off his rocker, which is very possible with some of the results we’ve seen this tournament already. Ultimately though, I expect Ruud to take down the young Argentine and move through to the final two at the Miami Open 2022.
Casper Ruud and Francisco Cerundolo have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. As aforementioned, it’s a good matchup for Ruud with Cerundolo not really playing the kind of game like Zverev in fact possesses, which allows him to go really big and play offensive tennis. Ruud was too solid on the day and I fully expect that to carry over here. It seems like Cerundolo has his work cut out for him here as the Norwegian aims to take this one and book his spot in the championship decider of the Miami Open 2022.
