TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Daniil Medvedev takes on Pablo Carreno Busta in the Quarter-Finals on Thursday, July 29th, 2021.
Will Pablo Carreno Busta come out here and case the huge upset to stop the only real threat left to Novak Djokovic’s Gold medal run? Will Daniil Medvedev continue to put on solid performances here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as he aims to get one step closer to the Final? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make it to the Semi-Finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Who will it be?
Pablo Carreno Busta cruised through his third round match, beating the German, Dominik Koepfer, in straight sets 7-6/6-3. Pablo Carreno Busta has been in great form this month, winning his biggest ever title at the Hamburg Open and now getting himself into the Quarter-Finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Pablo is a very solid player on all surfaces because he can vary his game to suit the different bounce height of the ball and the speed of play. Now in the Quarter-Finals, Pablo will have to raise his level even more that he meets the very in form and determined Daniil Medvedev.
Daniil Medvedev had to fight through a tight, but entertaining, third round match, beating the Italian Fabio Fognini in 3 sets 6-2/3-6/6-2. Daniil Medvedev will know that he put on a solid performance in the first and third set, but he cannot let his guard down as he did in the second set now that we are further in the business end of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Medvedev has a huge serve, forehand, and his backhand is one of the best in the world, so he definitely has the game to win it all here in Tokyo, but he needs to ensure he gets a solid win over Pablo Carreno Busta to get some more momentum going.
Daniil Medvedev and Pablo Carreno Busta have met 4 times before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 3-1. They met earlier this year in Mallorca where Medvedev won in 3 sets 3-6/6-3/6-2. I expect for this to be a very tight encounter because Pablo is a much tougher opponent than Fabio Fognini and he is in great form at the moment. Medvedev will know that he needs to win this match as he is the much higher ranked player and he is one of the Gold medal favourites, but Pablo will keep things tight as the Russian makes his way into the Semi-Finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
