TennisSection previews the 2021 Astana Open as Aslan Karatsev (1) takes on Emil Ruusuvuori in the Round of 16 on Thursday, September 23rd, 2021.
Will Aslan Karatsev move on? Will Emil Ruusuvuori cause the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we will see if the number one seed can show his best level and get through a tough first test. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Astana Open?
Aslan Karatsev has obviously had a breakout year, although he’s simmered down a bit since the first few months, he still is ranked quite high for a reason, and it’s not as if he’s playing terrible tennis. While he isn’t being the most consistent player, I feel like he’s starting to slowly improve his level again, and Ruusuvuori is the perfect test. If Karatsev can get through him easily, then I think he’ll be looking pretty good to be the top contender for the title. He will have to improve his service. I feel like one of the main reasons he was doing so well earlier on in the year was due to his absolute rocket of a serve, while he still has those incredible groundstrokes, he hasn’t been serving nearly as well. Let’s see if he can do all that successfully to get through this tough first round and move through to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Astana Open.
Emil Ruusuvuori has been playing some good tennis, and much like many other young new stars on the ATP Tour, he also has rather unpredictable results. He had a solid first match, winning the first set 6-2, then winning right after due to a retirement from his opponent. He plays a pretty consistent game, and can definitely be a poor match-up for someone like Karatsev, who plays best when he is able to keep the points short. Ruusuvuori will want to try and get into a lot of longer rallies, and if he can just draw a good amount of unforced errors from Karatsev, then I like his chances to really push him and maybe even beat him to book himself a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2021 Astana Open.
Aslan Karatsev and Emil Ruusuvuori have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It could turn into a pretty fun match, with the match most likely going the distance, I think it will mostly be who is able to adjust towards the end and put more pressure on the opponent. That person will be Aslan Karatsev, while he hasn’t been playing his best tennis this year, he still has that level inside him, and he may even get this match done in straights, but assuming he still isn’t feeling to be at his best, I think he’ll tough it out in three to progress here at the 2021 Astana Open.
