TennisSection previews the 2022 Cincinnati Masters as Stan Wawrinka takes on Andy Murray in the first round on Monday, August 15th, 2022.
The Cincinnati Masters draw has treated us to a blockbuster first-round match that pits two former Grand Slam champions. While both are certainly in the twilight of their careers this should be cracking contest. Will it be Stan Wawrinka who comes out on top? Or will Andy Murray conjure up more magic in Ohio?
Stan Wawrinka will be making his 14th appearance at the Cincinnati Masters. His best finish remains the semifinal run in 2012, whilst also making the quarterfinals three more times during his subsequent visits. Wawrinka returns to Ohio this year, unlikely to make a deep run having been handed a horror draw. First up for the Swiss one hander has former champion Andy Murray in his opening match, with a potential showdown against Cameron Norrie in the second round. With the likes of Casper Ruud and Carlos Alcaraz also lurking in his section of the draw, the odds are clearly stacked against him.
Andy Murray, meanwhile, was due to compete in qualifying at the Cincinnati Masters during the weekend, but has since received a direct entry into the draw. Murray took the unused special exempt spot which opened up following Jack Draper’s defeat in Montreal. Murray is one of the most decorated players in the draw having won two titles in this tournament, first as a 21-year-old in 2008 and then in 2011, beating Novak Djokovic both times. The Scot will be looking to snap a three-match losing streak stemming from his quarterfinal exit in Newport.
Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka have played 21 times in one of the most thrilling rivalries in the last decade. Murray leads the head-to-head 12-9 although they have not crossed paths since 2020 where Wawrinka defeated the Scot in the first round of the French Open. The Swiss one hander has lost his last four matches while Murray hasn’t fared any better in that span. As good as these two players have turned it on during their peak years, we might expect a cagey affair on Monday. Murray’s general feel on hard courts should hold him in good measure in this match.
