Rome Open 2022: Novak Djokovic vs. Aslan Karatsev Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Rome Open as Novak Djokovic takes on Aslan Karatsev in the second round on Tuesday, May 10th, 2022.

Will Novak Djokovic bounce back after his semifinal loss in Madrid? Or will Aslan Karatsev shock the top seed on the clay again? If recent results are anything to go by, Djokovic should be cruising into the third round of the Rome Open at a canter.

Novak Djokovic is peaking for Roland Garros. And even if Djokovic heads to Paris without a single title in the bag in 2022, he is still a co favorite to win the gold next month. The Serbian star has missed out on the chance to stamp his own authority this season for his refusal to get vaccinated against Covid. Djokovicmissed high-profile events such as the Australian Open and the Indian Wells-Miami double header in March. But even in this most peculiar of season for Djokovic, he has still managed to sustain his mojo and his ranking status as the top ranked player in the men’s game. So will Djokovic lay his hands on his first title of the season this week?

Aslan Karatsev will be Djokovic’s opening match at the Rome Open. Djokovic will need no reminding of the last time he faced the Russian. Karatsev stunned the World No.1 on his home territory in Belgrade last season, winning a classic semifinal in three sets. But Karatsev has become a shadow of the player that sensationally broke through the ATP’s mainstream to become a fully-fledged top 20 player. The effortless wins are now hard to come by. Since winning his third career title in Sydney earlierthis year, his season has gone into a tailspin. Karatsev is 9-10 heading to the Rome Open.

Novak Djokovic and Aslan Karatsev are currently tied at 1-1 in their head-to-head. Djokovic famously ended Karatsev’sincredible run at last year’s Australian Open in their first collision. The Serbian World No. 1 is steadily working his way into form and his Madrid Open adventure last week was a positive step in his chaotic season. Djokovic should advance on Tuesday.
