It is never a dull moment when Fabio Foginini is on the court and particularly at the Rome Open where he feeds on the crowd’s raucous support. The home favorite, however, has not been at his vintage best in each of his last two visits to the ForoItalico, losing to Ugo Humbert in 2020 and Kei Nishikori last season. Fognini owns a victory over Dominic Thiem in these parts when the Austrian power hitter was at the top of his game. So can the enigmatic Italian make amends from his Madrid disappointment?
Dominic Thiem leads Fabio Fognini 3-1 in their head-to-head. As mentioned, Fognini’s solitary win over the Austrian came in Rome four years ago when he defeated the former World No. 3 in three sets. Thiem’s comeback is yet to take shape despite working so hard to return to the tour. While consistency is Fognini’s biggest drawback, he should be the favorite to advance in Monday’s meeting.
