TennisSection previews the 2022 Pune Open as Daniel Altmaier (5) meets Joao Sousa in the Quarter-Finals on Friday February 4th, 2022.
A surprising Quarter-Final is upon us here at the 2022 Pune Open as German fifth seed Daniel Altmaier will play Joao Sousa of Portugal. Both men have defied the odds to reach this stage of the competition, and one of them has an excellent opportunity to reach their first ATP Semi-Final of the year. Who will get the win and advance?
Daniel Altmaier is ranked #85 on the ATP Tour and is the fifth seed here at the 2022 Pune Open. The 23 year old German has been moving up the rankings lately, and has looked good so far this week. He won a confidence-boosting three setter over veteran Radu Albot, and will be liking his chances of reaching his maiden ATP Semi-Final. His next opponent Joao Sousa is solid, but prefers the clay courts to this quicker surface. Altmaier is the favorite here, can he make the most of this matchup and move on?
Joao Sousa is unseeded here at the 2022 Pune Open and is ranked #137 in the world. The Portuguese veteran may be feeling the effects of two consecutive three setters so far this week, and it remains to be seen if he has enough left in the tank to overcome the younger and fitter German Daniel Altmaier. Sousa definitely has the advantage when it comes to experience, and he will be hoping to draw upon that to have any chance of winning here. He will be delighted at his play so far, and will have to pull out a magical performance to continue on this week.
This will be the first time that the two players are meeting on the ATP Tour, and it is shaping up to be a very interesting match. Both men will be pleased with their performances this week, and one of them can go even further and reach the Semis. I expect that man to be Daniel Altmaier. He is younger, fitter and stronger, and has looked excellent this week. He has momentum on his side and I expect him to get past Joao Sousa, reaching his first ever ATP Semi-Final here at the 2022 Pune Open.
