Rome Open 2022: Roberto Bautista Agut vs. Alex De Minaur Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Rome Open as Roberto Bautista Agut takes on Alex De Minaur in the first round on Monday, May 9th, 2022.

Will Roberto Bautista Agut reign supreme in his first-round match at the Rome Open? Or will Alex De Minaur’s quick feet prove detrimental to the Spaniard’s game plan? Either way, this should be a high-quality affair for an opening round, so who will come out on top?

Can Roberto Bautista Agut avert a mini crisis that seems to have engulfed his otherwise brilliant start to the season? The Spaniard was in top form in the first quarter of the year. Having steered his country to the ATP Cup where they finished runner-up to Canada, he reached the third round of the Australian Open. Bautista Agut ended his three-year wait for an ATP title when he defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili to win the Qatar Open. Much of the first three months were built by consistency. But since then he picked up a wrist injury which halted his clay-court preparations, forcing him to miss events in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona respectively. His return at the Madrid Open ended early as he fell to a surprise second-round defeat to Dan Evans. Will he bounce back at the Rome Open?

With five wins on clay so far, Alex De Minaur will be in better shape than his Spanish opponent. The Australian World No. 22 reached the semifinals of Barcelona at the end of April, and only a superhuman effort by Carlos Alcaraz prevented him from reaching his first ATP final on the clay. The draws seem to be getting harder by the week for De Minaur, who has since lost to Jannik Sinner in Madrid and now is pitted to face Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round of the Rome Open.

Alex De Minaur leads Roberto Bautista Agut 2-1 in their head-to-head. Both of the Aussie’s wins came in 2019, while Bautista Agut scored his first win at last season’s ATP Cup. There were doubts surrounding the fitness of Bautista Agut in Madrid, but he delivered an emphatic answer with his 6-0 6-2 win over Jenson Brooksby. He is the slight favorite coming into this match at the Rome Open, but that defeat to Evans has changed my mind.
