TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Karen Khachanov in the Round of 16 on Thursday, August 12th, 2021.
Will Karen Khachanov continue improving on his amazing form which saw him win the Silver medal in Tokyo and now beating the always tough Aslan Karatsev? Will Stefanos Tsitsipas build on that incredible win over Ugo Humbert which was the match of the tournament so far? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Toronto Open. Who will it be?
Karen Khachanov put on a composed performance in the Round of 32 against the power hitting Aslan Karatsev, beating his fellow Russian in straight sets 7-6/6-4. Karen made a statement with that win, that he is improving and getting back to his best, so his name should be more respected amongst the best Russians in the world. Karen has an amazing game, especially his forehand when he is confident, so I expect that win to help him come into this Round of 16 match. However, he meets the much higher ranked and one of the toughest players for anyone to beat, Stefanos Tsitsipas, here at the 2021 Toronto Open.
Stefanos Tsitsipas came through a thriller of a match against Ugo Humbert, finally getting his maiden win against the Frenchman after having lost their only two prior matches. Stefanos won in 3 sets 6-3/6-7/6-1. Ugo Humbert saved 5 match points in that second set tiebreak and won it 15-13 to bring it to a 3rd set. However, Stefanos put his foot down straight away and just started hitting some incredible forehand winners. Stefanos knows that win was very big for his confidence and I expect him to come into this match against Karen Khachanov at the 2021 Toronto Open with a lot of momentum.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Karen Khachanov have met 3 times before, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 3-0. Karen has only ever won one set against Stefanos, but this was this year at the Rotterdam Open. I expect a tight match here because of course Stefanos is the better player and higher ranked one as well, but Karen will keep things tight as he has found his rhythm in his groundstrokes and has made it far in tournaments in the last few weeks, finding his confidence again. Stefanos will still come out on top here because after that win against Humbert he will know that he can confront anyone because he was thrown and pressured all throughout that match, but it will be a tight win which gets the Greek into the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 Toronto Open.
