TennisSection previews the 2021 Barcelona Open as Kei Nishikori meets Guido Pella in the First Round on Monday, April 19th 2021.
Will Guido Pella have a much better week than he did last week at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters as he looks to cause the upset in the First Round? Will Kei Nishikori continue to improve his game as he looks to get back to his best in 2021 at the 2021 Barcelona Open on a surface he very much enjoys? Both players are very strong when they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Second Round. Who will it be?
Guido Pella has not really had much success on clay this year, playing both the 2021 Sardegna Open and the Monte-Carlo Masters, but losing in straight sets in the first round both times. Guido Pella has not played much this year, and has mainly focused his attention on smaller Challenger Tour tournaments where his level of tennis seems to be at the moment. Guido Pella, when in form, is always tough to beat and he can definitely hurt some big name players, but we have not seen this in a while. Guido Pella needs to find his movement on clay as that is his strong suit, but he needs to do that quickly as he is to meet Kei Nishikori in the First Round of the 2021 Barcelona Open.
Kei Nishikori has not yet played on clay this year, with his last tournament being a few weeks ago at the 2021 Miami Open. However, with Kei Nishikori’s experience and success on this surface, I am very sure he will be ready to go right from the start. Kei loves playing on clay as he is able to utilize his strengths, his footwork and speed, more with the ball going a bit more slowly around the court. Kei Nishikori will want to ensure he gets some strong matches under his belt here in Barcelona as the bigger tournaments on the clay come through in the next month. How will the experienced Japanese, who is continuing to improve and get back to his best, deal with the declining Argentine Guido Pella?
Kei Nishikori and Guido Pella have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. Although Guido Pella has played a couple of matches on the clay in the last couple of weeks, I have not seen any strong tennis from him to give me enough confidence in his ability to get anything out of this match. Kei Nishikori is such a good player, especially in these conditions, and he will want to get some solid victories under his belt here at the 2021 Barcelona Open. If this was in 2018, perhaps I would have thought Guido Pella would have had a chance, but he just is not in form at all this year. Kei, on the other hand, is improving with every tournament, and he will make his way to the Second Round of the 2021 Barcelona Open.
