TennisSection previews the 2021 St Petersburg Open as Karen Khachanov takes on Adrian Mannarino in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, October 27th, 2021.
Will Karen Khachanov get the win? Will Adrian Mannarino pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a favorite for the title taking on a tough test. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 St. Petersburg Open?
Karen Khachanov had a great week at the Kremlin Cup, just a few hours from St. Petersburg. He fell short to eventual champion in Aslan Karatsev in the semifinals. We know Khachanov is a great fast court player, seeing as he did great at Wimbledon and won the silver medal in Tokyo. This match in the opening round of the St Petersburg Open will be a tough one, as Mannarino played pretty well that week as well, defeating Andrey Rublev. Still, Khachanov is ranked much higher for a reason and went further at the Kremlin Cup for a reason, so I expect Khachanov to tough it out and get through Mannarino and to the next round at the 2021 St Petersburg Open.
Adrian Mannarino has a very tough one ahead of him in Karen Khachanov, having to take on one of the best fast court players in the world at the moment. Still, Mannarino should not feel hopeless, fast courts are also Mannarino’s best surface, and he did defeat Andrey Rublev. However, he lost his next match to Berankis, which simply put, was really strange considering he had just taken out Rublev. Still, he probably has recovered since then, and if he can use his fast court prowess to the fullest, he might be able to take a set off Khachanov at the St Petersburg Open.
Karen Khachanov and Adrian Mannarino have met 3 times before, with Karen Khachanov leading the head to head 3-0. Khachanov clearly has the number on him, and will very likely make it 4 come Tuesday. Their most recent meeting was 3 years ago, in Moscow on an indoor hard court, with Khachanov winning easily. If he could do that then, then I’m sure Khachanov will be able to do it again at the St Petersburg Open. However, Khachanov has been known to show inconsistencies, and I don’t think he’ll be fully mentally recovered from his tough semifinal loss, so we may see him struggle a little bit, but ultimately he’ll tough it out and get some good momentum started to kick off his campaign at the 2021 St. Petersburg Open.
