Will the defending Champion, Stefanos Tsitsipas, get his title defence campaign underway strongly? Both players have won here before so they know how to win in these tough and challenging conditions. Fabio Fognini had to come through a very tough and tight opening match here at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters, beating the Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in 3 sets, 7-5/4-6/6-3. Fognini seemed to be in control of the match up a set. However, as he so often does, the Italian let his guard down. In most tournaments, you would have expected less of a fight back from Fabio, who at times is very nonchallant in his attitude on court. However, due to the proximity of the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters to his hometown near San Remo, there were a lot of Italians in the crowd cheering him on which gave him some motivation. Fognini will need a lot more than just motivation as he now meets Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Stefanos Tsitsipas will be looking to get his clay court season underway strongly here at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters. The Greek has a lot of points to defend over the next couple months, the title here in Monaco, and 2 Finalists in Barcelona and the French Open. Tsitsipas is an amazing clay court player and he knows that he can beat anyone on this surface when he is at his best. However, he has not shown his best tennis since he lost the French Open Final last year, and he will be looking to find that clay court confidence again as he now meets Fabio Fognini at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Fabio Fognini have met 3 times before, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 3-0. They met last year at Indian Wells where Fognini won his only set against the Greek. However, Tsitsipas has dominated their head to head mostly. This is going to be an interesting match, because Fognini will try and get the crowd on his side. However, Tsitsipas will not care about the crowd as he already beat Fognini in Rome a few years ago. I expect for a good match from Tsitsipas who knows that if he is to stand a chance at defending his title at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters, he cannot afford any slip ups early on.
