TennisSection previews the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022 as Andrey Rublev takes on Alex de Minaur in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, April 13th, 2022.
Will Andrey Rublev get the win? Will Alex de Minaur pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where offense meets defense on a challenging surface for the 2 of them. Who will triumph and move on to the Round of 16 at the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022?
Andrey Rublev played a great tournament here last year, reaching the final and defeating the 11-time champion Rafael Nadal en route to the championship round. While he may have had a dip in form since a good start to the season, he is not to be counted out. He has quite the opponent ahead of him, but I think the clay will help Rublev. While he’s struggled on it in the past, he’s obviously a good clay courter, being able to take a lot of time on his massive groundstrokes, hitting all his spots and pushing opponents out of the way as he aims to do here at the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
Alex de Minaur beat a solid clay courter to set up a tough meeting with 5th seed Andrey Rublev. Rublev is the defending runner-up, and while I do expect offense to triumph over defense, it will not be easy. I think Rublev simply had a tough time mentally in Miami, especially since the week prior he had a good run at Indian Wells, obviously attaining a 13 match winning streak in which he lifted the titles in Marseille and Dubai. De Minaur has the consistency to stay in it, but he ultimately just does not have what it takes to overpower Rublev at the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
Andrey Rublev and Alex de Minaur have met twice before, with Alex de Minaur leading the head to head 2-0. Their two meetings might be completely irrelevant, but they could show us that it’s inherently not the best matchup for Rublev. De Minaur is an incredible mover, but I also think the movement of Rublev is rather underrated, he’s an established top 10 player and he needs consistency for that. I expect him to pick it back up here at the Monte-Carlo Masters 2022.
