A return to the clay has galvanized Lorenzo Musetti, but playing Benoit Paire is like flipping a coin. It could get better or worse. So will the Italian young gun steer himself to victory when he takes on the unpredictable Frenchman at the Monte-Carlo Masters?
Lorenzo Musetti restored some of his lost confidence at the Grand Prix II in Marrakech this week, picking up a pair of solid wins over Albert Ramos Vinolas and Carlos Taberner. The Italian would reach the quarterfinals where he lost to Serbia’s Laslo Djere in straight sets. In spite of that defeat, the week in Morocco marked an important step in Musetti’s bid to refine his game just in time for the European clay swing. The 20-year-old has dropped to No. 82 in the rankings, and with a huge chunk of points to defend in the next two months; he needs to back up that run to the last eight in Morocco at the Monte-Carlo Masters, starting with his first-round match against Benoit Paire.
Benoit Paire, unlike Musetti, did not partake at any tournament after losing in that bizarre three-setter against Henri Laaksonen in the first round of Miami. Paire is a measly 3-10 for the season, with just one win in his last nine matches. Historically, the Frenchman has not been productive at the Monte-Carlo Masters where he has lost in the first round in each of his last three visits. His overall record at the Principality is dreadful, with just four main draw wins in seven editions. Can he turn the tide when he takes on Lorenzo Musetti?
Lorenzo Musetti leads the head-to-head over Benoit Paire 1-0. He defeated the Frenchman on the hard courts of Miami last season. Musetti should the favorite to progress when they clash for the second time at this week’s Monte-Carlo Masters. The Italian is in better form and couldn’t have picked a better time to play Paire, whose famine record of one win in his last nine does not sit well with me.
