TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Carlos Alcaraz takes on Peter Gojowczyk in the Round of 16 on Sunday, September 5th, 2021.
Will Peter Gojowczyk shock us all by getting into the second week of the 2021 US Open when many did not believe he would even come through the first round? Will Carlos Alcaraz back up the incredible win he achieved against Stefanos Tsitsipas on Friday? This will be an interesting match to see how Alcaraz deals with the incredible success. Can he cruise into the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 US Open?
Peter Gojowczyk came through a 4 set win against the Swiss qualifier, Henri Laaksonen, beating him by coming back from a set down 3-6/6-3/6-1/6-4. Peter has really not had too much competition here in New York, with his only big win coming in his first match where he beat Ugo Humbert. However, since then he only met an out of form Dusan Lajovic and Henri Laaksonen. Peter will know that he is going to have to raise his level drastically and expect one of the toughest matches he will have here at the 2021 US Open as he meets the up and coming Carlos Alcaraz.
Carlos Alcaraz… what can we say? That performance he put on against Stefanos Tsitsipas on Friday to get himself in the Round of 16 was just incredible. The 18-year-old Spaniard showed us that when you have belief and you go after your shots, you can achieve big things. Carlos was hitting winners left right and center, both off his forehand and his backhand. Tsitsipas used all of his amazing game to keep things tight, but Carlos made sure to always have the fighting spirit, and in the end this allowed him to make that comeback in the third set when 5-2 down and stealing the set in the tiebreak, as well as then ensuring he got to a tiebreak where he won in the 5th set. This is just the start of great things for Carlos Alcaraz as it is clear to see that a new star of the game is born. Can the Spaniard back up that win with an easier one here as he aims to go further here at the 2021 US Open?
Carlos Alcaraz and Peter Gojowczyk have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Peter does have more experience, having begun his career in 2006. However, Carlos is going to be one of the next big stars in tennis in the future and I am sure he will come out here very confident from that win against Tsitsipas. Peter has not had to play against anyone way above his level here other than Humbert, and he has had an easy ride. Carlos has not had an easy ride and he has proven that he can hang with anyone in the draw. I expect a straightforward victory for the young Spaniard as he makes his way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 US Open.
