TennisSection previews the 2022 Miami Open as Daniil Medvedev takes on Andy Murray in the Round of 64 on Saturday, March 26th, 2022.
Will Daniil Medvedev get the win? Will Andy Murray pull off the upset? This will be a very fascinating one, where we have two former world no. 1s coming to a clash. Who will triumph and move on to the Round of 32 at the 2022 Miami Open?
Daniil Medvedev has been struggling a little bit as of late after having his best career season last year and playing at a very high level down under, where the dramatic final may have caused him to see worse results. His game is still clearly there though, and I think it’s only a matter of time before Medvedev regroups and takes back his top spot in the ATP Rankings. In front of him though stands an opponent who will always be a brutal competitor in Andy Murray, a former world no. 1 himself. Murray is slowly but surely regaining his form, and I don’t think Medvedev will have a super easy time with him, but I most certainly believe that it’s a very favorable matchup that Medvedev should win as he aims to get a good start off to his campaign at the 2022 Miami Open.
Andy Murray took care of a difficult opponent today in Federico Delbonis rather handedly, but his next opponent will be a much, much greater task. Daniil Medvedev is one of the best players in the world, and I think it’s a brutal matchup for Murray. Medvedev will play very consistently from the baseline, hardly missing and getting every single shot, but he also hits through the ball really nicely and is able to be aggressive. Murray has not been able to be too aggressive, and while he does have the variety to fight someone like Medvedev, I don’t think his serve is nearly strong enough to be able to stay too deep in the sets with Medvedev since as soon as he gets it back, he’s just going to beat Murray at his own game, not allowing him to do much else as the top seed aims to reclaim the top spot on the rankings at the 2022 Miami Open.
Daniil Medvedev and Andy Murray have met once before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came in Brisbane in 2019, with Medvedev winning very easily in straight sets. I expect a similar result here, you never want to play against Murray since he has the fight and the grit, but the matchup simply isn’t favorable for him, so although Medvedev made disappointing showings in Acapulco and Indian Wells, I expect him to take this one and get back his top game at the 2022 Miami Open.
