TennisSection previews the Indian Wells 2022 as Taylor Fritz takes on Alex de Minaur in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, March 16th, 2022.
Will Taylor Fritz come out here and aim to give his American fans a good show and get a step closer to his achievements last year at Indian Wells? Will Alex de Minaur show us why he is so hard to break down on the tennis court? Both players are incredibly tough to beat and motivated, but only one will make their way to the quarterfinals of Indian Wells. Who will it be?
Taylor Fritz had to fight through an incredibly tough match yesterday against the Spaniard, Jaume Munar, beating him in 3 sets 6-4/2-6/7-6(2). Taylor was not at his best for the vast majority of the match, and if being completely honest, I think Jaume played better. However, with his huge first serve, Taylor was able to come in clutch in the tough moments, and get himself ahead in the scoreline eventually. Fritz will want to improve and get into the quarterfinals at Indian Wells, however, with that form, it is going to be a very tough match as he now meets Alex de Minaur.
Alex de Minaur had an easier match against a tougher opponent in his last match, beating the American, Tommy Paul, in straight sets 7-6(2)/6-4. Alex does not have the biggest of serves, but he has incredible groundstrokes and his movement is impeccable. Alex will know that this bottom half of the 2022 Indian Wells draw is very open, and if he is able to get through another few rounds here, he will have a chance for the title. However, that is much easier said than done, especially when your next match is against someone like Taylor Fritz.
Taylor Fritz and Alex de Minaur have met 5 times before, with Alex de Minaur leading the head to head 4-1. They last met last year at the US Open with Taylor winning in 4 sets. Although Taylor won that match, he was in much better form back then. Alex de Minaur has had a great tournament and he has shown us why he is the No.1 Australian on the ATP Tour. Taylor has also played well, but the struggles he showed yesterday against Jaume Munar are not promising for his chances at the 2022 Indian Wells. I do expect for Taylor to get a set through his serve and help of the crowd, but at the end of the day, I think Alex de Minaur is in better form to get the job done.
