TennisSection previews the Indian Wells 2022 as Carlos Alcaraz takes on Gael Monfils in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, March 16th, 2022.
Will Carlos Alcaraz get the win? Will Gael Monfils pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have the on fire next-gen star taking on an ATP veteran who marked down a remarkable win himself. Who will triumph to move through to the quarterfinals at Indian Wells 2022?
Carlos Alcaraz got a very impressive win over fellow Spaniard in Roberto Bautista Agut, dropping just 2 games putting on a very impressive display of aggressive tennis. He looks head to yet another veteran with a fascinating game. Alcaraz is the favorite, but it will not be as easy as RBA. Monfils likes to rally with lower pace balls, but he also has the ability to crack his shots at some of the top seeds on the ATP Tour when he feels the time is right, and he will be doing that against Alcaraz. Overall though, Alcaraz is in too good of form and with the short balls that Monfils was hitting in his match against Medvedev, despite it working there, it won’t work against Alcaraz as the teenager looks ahead to the quarterfinals of Indian Wells 2022.
Gael Monfils got a pretty unbelievable win over the new world no. 1, dropping the first set but reaching for every ball and feeding in a lot of lower pace balls short in the court troubling Medvedev. Against Carlos Alcaraz this will be very difficult, Alcaraz likes to move in to the net a lot more than Medvedev, so I do think he will be jumping on a lot of shots, so Gael will really have to amp up his aggression that we know he can produce. The court is pretty slow which I think is more of a help for Monfils since he doesn’t have to deal with Alcaraz’s pace of shot as much while also having the aid of a lower bounce. Let’s see if he can back up his win and move on to the last eight at Indian Wells 2022.
Carlos Alcaraz and Gael Monfils have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. It’s not really a matchup where either player is the favorite, and I think it mostly depends on the surface. On a quicker court I might favor Monfils, but on a slower court it’s without a doubt Alcaraz. I do think the match will be tight, Monfils won’t just go away after his big win, and with the amount of upsets we’ve already seen this tournament, Alcaraz losing and being just 18 years of age wouldn’t be a shock. Let’s see if the young Spaniard can meet expectations anyway though as he seeks a place in the quarterfinals at Indian Wells 2022.
