TennisSection previews the 2022 Indian Wells Open as Fabio Fognini takes on Pablo Andujar in the Round of 128 on Thursday, March 10th, 2022.
Will Fabio Fognini get the win? Will Pablo Andujar pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a clash of styles as two veterans come to a head. Who will triumph to move through to the Round of 64 at the 2022 Indian Wells Open?
Fabio Fognini played solid at the Rio Open, losing out to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz, he played some great clay court tennis, and while Indian Wells is no clay court, it’s one slow court and Fognini will like his chances there. Andujar also likes slow courts, and will be a hard opponent for Fognini, but I think Fognini can outplay him in the rallies as Andujar doesn’t really have many weapons, and Fognini’s entire game is literally a weapon, so I think he can counter his playstyle and take him down to move on to the Round of 64 at the 2022 Indian Wells Open.
Pablo Andujar has been playing some solid tennis, despite being a veteran of the ATP Tour, he really put his name on the map last clay season where he took down Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem. I don’t think he can take down Fognini here though, he obviously won’t be able to consistently keep up his level, but Fognini is still a top player himself, and I suspect he won’t allow Andujar to bully him too much as he aims to book a place in the next round of the 2022 Indian Wells Open.
Fabio Fognini and Pablo Andujar have met 5 times before, with Fabio Fognini leading the head to head 4-1. Unsurprisingly, these two have played a good bit throughout their careers. Even more unsurprisingly, all their meetings came on clay. Fognini won pretty handedly most of the time, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be able to win this one easily. I think he’ll need a little bit of time to adjust, but he will like these courts and he will enjoy a nice victory over a challenging opponent as he aims to book a place in the Round of 64 of the 2022 Indian Wells Open.
