TennisSection previews the 2021 Sofia Open as Jannik Sinner (1) meets Filip Krajinovic (5) in the Semi-Finals on Saturday October 2nd, 2021.
Number one seeded Jannik Sinner will face fifth seed Filip Krajinovic in the Semi-Finas of the 2021 Sofia Open. The Italian is the favorite here due to his higher ranking and better form, but the Serbian is very experienced and dangerous on this surface. Can Krajinovic cause the big upset here and advance to his first Final in 2021? Or will Sinner get the win and move on as expected?
Jannik Sinner is ranked #14 in the world and is the top seed here at the 2021 Sofia Open . The Italian is one of the very best players in the world, and as the defending champion he was the favorite to win this event. His potent serve and penetrating groundstrokes make him a very tough customers on this surface and he will be looking to dictate things from the baseline. He is yet to drop a set this tournament, winning in straight sets against both Egor Gerasimov and James Duckworth. In this type of form he must be considered the favorite here against Filip Krajinovic, who has been having an inconsistent season but should not be discounted due to his big game and extensive experience.
Filip Krajinovic is the fifth seed here at the 2021 Sofia Open and is ranked #37 on the ATP Tour. The Serbian is a very good player with an all-around game but has been plagued with inconsistency this year. He switched things on so far in Bulgaria, storming to the Quarter-Finals for the loss of only six games through two matches. Krajinovic was then surprisingly pushed to the limit by Kamil Majchrzak, winning narrowly in three sets. It is that type of inconsistency which has led him to have a poor season thus far, but he will be hoping to put that behind him here and reach his first ATP Final of the year. Jannik Sinner is the big favorite but Krajinovic has quite a few top 10 wins and will know exactly what to do here. If he is able to serve well and mix his game up he can frustrate the young Italian, drawing him into careless errors. He will have to play the best match of his 2021 season to get the win here however.
Somewhat surprisingly this will be the first meeting between the two players, and I am expecting a very interesting match. This is a classic match of youth vs experience, with the young superstar Jannik Sinner aiming to repeat his title winning ways from last year, and Filip Krajinovic desperate for a result here as he seeks to end a miserable year on a high. After considering everything I am going with Sinner to win here. He clearly enjoys playing on these courts and has been having a superb year. The Italian has so much firepower from all over, and is very capable of overpowering his experienced Serbian opponent. Krajinovic is good enough to stay in it for a while and keep it close, but ultimately he will lose here. Jannik Sinner will get the win here, advancing to yet another Final here at the 2021 Sofia Open.
