TennisSection previews the 2021 Paris Masters as Alexander Zverev takes on Grigor Dimitrov in the Round of 16 on Thursday, November 4th, 2021.
Will Alexander Zverev get the win? Will Grigor Dimitrov pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have an exciting matchup with a top player and someone who can beat anyone on his day. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Paris Masters?
Alexander Zverev has been playing some unbelievable tennis, making deep runs in all the slams this year and asserting himself as one of the top players on the ATP. The conditions in Paris are great for him, even though they’re slower this year, it may be even better for him. Zverev is an all-courter, he can bring his best stuff on any surface, but a slow hard court might be his best surface, he hits huge groundstrokes with big backswings, so if he has the time to hit big and his ball is gonna travel fast as it goes to his opponents side then he will have a decisive edge. He should get the win over Grigor Dimitrov, who has been very inconsistent this year, but has shown some good level of play recently. Still, Zverev is a great matchup for him, so I expect him to roll past Dimitrov and into the quarterfinals at the 2021 Paris Masters.
Grigor Dimitrov got a tough win over Karen Khachanov, dropping the first set to storm back and dominate the next two sets. Khachanov actually lifted the title a few years back, and for Dimitrov to win two matches here and set up a meeting with one of the best players in the world in Alexander Zverev is an excellent feat. Still, I don’t think he has much of a chance, Zverev hits huge, and at the same time consistently. Dimitrov won’t be able to handle his massive serves, and he doesn’t serve big enough to repel the way Zverev returns, and when they get into rallies, it will be too hard for Dimitrov to make inroads and actually be aggressive seeing as a lot of his balls land short in the court and he tends to slice a lot these days. I think Zverev will simply overpower him as he aims to move on to the quarterfinals here at the 2021 Paris Masters.
Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov have met 3 times before, with Alexander Zverev leading the head to head 2-1. Their head to head matches are practically irrelevant, considering they came in 2014 and 2016. But it does show that even when Dimitrov was still playing at a good level, and Zverev was still a teenager, Zverev already had the number on him. That’s because of the favorable matchup where the serve works in his favor as do most rallies from the back of the court. In order to win this one, Dimitrov will have to try and keep the rallies to Zverev’s forehand, but even if he is able to do that, he will have to go a step further and start to be the aggressor, which is much easier said than done. I expect Zverev to continue his excellent run of form to take the win and move on to the quarterfinals as the 2021 Paris Masters.
