Will David Goffin summon the form that took him to a top-10 ranking? Or will Australia’s Jordan Thompson inflict yet more misery towards the struggling Belgian? Goffin looks to be back to his best this past weekend, so an upset in this one might be a long shot.
David Goffin has endured a turbulent six months that has seen his ranking deteriorate to the depths of obscurity. There is a peculiar number next to Goffin’s name. The Belgian is the world No. 71, far off from his career-high of No. 7 which he achieved less than five years ago. Injuries have played a huge part in Goffin’s downfall and his recovery time has taken longer than anticipated. The Belgian is back playing, but it is clear to see he has lost that yard of pace which has unmasked his biggest strength. Goffin did get a couple of match wins at the Davis Cup this past weekend, so he will be pumped to keep that winning streak alive at Indian Wells.
Jordan Thompson, meanwhile, continues to loiter around the tour-level scene without causing any significant impact. The Australian World No. 78 has won once in three main draw appearances at Indian Wells before. So we can safely assume, this has not been Thompson’s most fruitful tournament by any means. The 27-year-old has been in the US since the start of February following his early exit at the Australian Open. Thompson reached the quarterfinals of the inaugural Dallas Open last month – his best result of 2022 thus far.
David Goffin and Jordan Thompson have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Thursday’s match at Indian Wells will be their first official meeting. Goffin earned two confidence-boosting wins last weekend at the Davis Cup and should be in pole position to win on Thursday at the California desert. Thompson is hardly a stumbling block right out of the gate, so this looks like a very winnable opening match for the Belgian.
