TennisSection previews the 2022 Dubai Open as Jannik Sinner takes on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the first round on Tuesday, February 22nd, 2022.
Jannik Sinner is set to play his first match since his quarterfinal defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Australian Open. And the Italian will need to find his footing fast on his second visit to the Dubai Open. Sinner takes on the mercurial Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina who has been busy since the Australian Open.
Jannik Sinner is a solid 7-1 for the season. He won all three of his singles matches at the ATP Cup, but Italy’s bid to move beyond the group stage came to a standstill. But still, Sinner produced his best showing at the Melbourne Slam, reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the first time. But he was outclassed by an in-form Stefanos Tsitsipas in the last eight as the Greek served up a masterful performance to take out Sinner in straight sets. Sinner elected to sit out from all indoor hard court tournaments in Europe this month in order to recharge his batteries. The 20-year-old is learning the importance of being shrewd in his schedule. He will return to the Dubai Open for the second time in his career after last year’s quarterfinal finish.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, unlike Jannik Sinner, has been busy since the Australian Open. The 22-year-old who reached the second round of the year’s first Major has played at three more tournaments. Overall, Davidovich Fokina has compiled a modest 3-5 record ahead of his second visit to the Dubai Open. His Middle-Eastern swing started on a positive note though, with Davidovich Fokina securing a Top 30 win in Doha when he defeated Dan Evans in three sets. But his campaign in Qatar’s capital ended in the quarterfinals stage when he lost 6-1 6-1 to eventual champion Roberto Bautista Agut.
Jannik Sinner and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina have not played each other on the ATP Tour. Sinner and Davidovich Fokina are two years apart, but the gulf in ranking and superiority is growing exponentially. Sinner is making his first appearance on singles court since the Australian Open. But he did get a chance to refine his game in doubles at the Dubai Open on Monday. The Italian should be a huge favorite to advance.
