TennisSection previews the 2021 Madrid Open as Dominic Thiem (3) meets Marcos Giron (Q) in the Second Round on Tuesday, May 4th, 2021.
Will Marcos Giron be able to cause a huge upset and make his way further than anyone would have expected him to here at the 2021 Madrid Open? Will Dominic Thiem make his ATP Tour return with a dominant display after we have not seen him play for nearly two months due to injury and lack of motivation? Both players will be giving it their best here, but only one will make their way to the Third Round. Who will it be?
Marcos Giron came through an extremely tight 3-set encounter against the Spaniard, Pablo Andujar, in the First Round, beating him (8)6-7/7-6(4)/7-5. Marcos Giron was not at his best throughout that match, but he was able to show more composure during the extremely tight moments which resulted in him winning. Marcos Giron is a very powerful player, but he is not really made to play on clay as he looks to finish points off very quickly and is not comfortable in very long rallies. How will the American fare against one of the best ralliers in tennis, in Dominic Thiem?
Dominic Thiem is playing his first match since March 16th this year where he lost in shocking fashion to Lloyd Harris in his only match in Dubai. Dominic Thiem has said publicly that he needed to take a break from tennis to make him both rest and also make him miss the sport as he was having a hard time to find the motivation required to give it your all, especially after he won his biggest title last year, the US Open. Dominic Thiem, however, now seems ready to get going here at the 2021 Madrid Open, and he has been putting in the work in training. We are all very excited to see Dominic Thiem back, and he will definitely want to put on a solid performance on his favourite surface against Marco Giron.
Dominic Thiem and Marcos Giron have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. Although Marcos Giron has already gotten a win under his belt here at the 2021 Madrid Open, I don’t see him standing a chance against a Dominic Thiem who is extremely determined to make a strong statement with his return to the court. Dominic Thiem is the second best player on the ATP Tour on clay you have to say, just behind Rafael Nadal, and he will want to get some dominant performances under his belt to show everyone that he is back and ready to go.
