TennisSection previews the 2022 Montreal Open as Cameron Norrie takes on Brandon Nakashima in the Round of 64 on Tuesday, August 9th, 2022.
Will Cameron Norrie get the win? Will Brandon Nakashima pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have a top tier player taking on a young talent. Who will triumph and move on to the Round of 32 at the 2022 Montreal Open?
Cameron Norrie just had a great week in Los Cabos, losing out in the final to the World No. 1 in the end. As he comes into Canada this week, he’ll be feeling confident on his best surface, a slow hard court. Brandon Nakashima won’t be loving the conditions either, as his game is rather aggressive and Norrie is not only an excellent counter for that, but with the help of the slow court he’ll love it even more here at the 2022 Montreal Open.
Brandon Nakashima has been getting better and better, but he still has some work to do as he looks to face Cameron Norrie in the first round here. It’s a brutal first match for him, and in order to win he’ll have to hope Norrie is off his game. Even if he plays his best tennis, I really don’t like the matchup for him and I’d be surprised if he managed to wrangle off even a set from the No. 1 British player as the two square off for a spot in the last 32 at the 2022 Montreal Open.
Cameron Norrie and Brandon Nakashima have met three times before, with Cameron Norrie leading the head to head 2-1. Their first meeting came in 2020, when neither player really had a grasp on things, but Nakashima got it done. Their next two meetings were very straightforward for Norrie, especially one of them which will play a more special part in this match: their final in Los Cabos last season. Those are very slow conditions, and really allowed for Norrie to show his full stride, and I only expect more of that as he looks to move on at the 2022 Montreal Open.
