TennisSection previews the 2022 Acapulco Open as Alexander Zverev takes on Jenson Brooksby in the Round of 32 on Monday, February 21st, 2022.
Will Alexander Zverev get the win? Will Jenson Brooksby pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where the World No. 3 and defending champion looks ahead to quite a tough matchup. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2022 Acapulco Open?
Alexander Zverev has been struggling, his level at the end of the last season was insane, winning the olympics, barely losing to Djokovic in the US Open semis, then making deep runs in Indian Wells and Paris before winning the ATP Finals, taking out Djokovic and Medvedev. However, his level really went down a notch, having been knocked out of the Australian Open in the fourth round in straight sets, then losing to Bublik in straight sets in the final of a 250. It doesn’t help him that his next opponent is Jenson Brooksby, a guy who plays a very quirky game, and one that can definitely get into Zverevs head and prevent him from playing his game. For a player of his quality, I expect Zverev to regroup and take it, but it will not be easy as he aims to get a good start to his campaign at the 2022 Acapulco Open.
Jenson Brooksby looks ahead to a very challenging match, where he aims to take down not only a top 3 player, but the defending champion. Brooksby has a chance here, with the game he plays, he can make a lot of players struggle who are susceptible to slices and longer rallies with lower pace. Alexander Zverev is definitely one of those players. I think Zverev will regroup, especially because he’s the defending champion, but it will be really interesting to see what happens as he aims to get past a very difficult opponent to move on to the Round of 16 at the 2022 Acapulco Open.
Alexander Zverev and Jenson Brooksby have met once before, with Alexander Zverev leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came at the tailend of last year in Indian Wells, it took Zverev 3 sets to edge out the American. Zverev didn’t play amazing in Indian Wells, so if he could do it then on a slower hard court, maybe he can regroup here, and I do think he will. He will really need to focus on making sure to play some more first strike tennis with his serve, which he doesn’t really do that often, but it will be key as he aims to take out Brooksby and book a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2022 Acapulco Open.
