TennisSection previews the 2022 Rotterdam Open as Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on Felix Auger-Aliassime in the final on Sunday, February 13th, 2022.
Stefanos Tsitsipas reached his first final of the season after mounting a stirring comeback to end Jiri Lehecka’s fairytale run at the Rotterdam Open. But the Greek will have another major challenge against the power-hitting Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime who is looking to end his own barren run in the ATP finals after eight previous runner-up finishes.
Stefanos Tsitsipas made sure there won’t be another chapter in the fairytale run of Jiri Lehecka at the Rotterdam Open. The Czech qualifier has won plenty of hearts in the Netherlands’ second city this week. He won his first ATP main draw match on his debut, besting Denis Shapovalov in straight sets. Then he took it up a notch from that moment on, beating the likes of van de Zandschulp and Lorenzo Musetti. And for a set in the semifinals, Lehecka looked good value to spring an upset and keep this mesmeric run going for one more round. His attack-minded approach gave him the impetus to break Tsitsipas and surprisingly take a one-set lead. But the Greek has shown this week, when his back is against the wall, he finds a different gear altogether. Tsitsipas found his rhythm and wrestled control of the match. In the end, Lehecka’s inexperience was evident as the top seed found a way to win in three sets.
Felix Auger-Aliassime showed great resilience in his semi-final encounter against the defending champion, Andrey Rublev, beating the Russian in 3 sets. Felix had to come back from a set down to win and he is now into his 9th ATP Tour Singles Final. With the form that the Canadian has shown in the start of 2022, Felix has been a real threat in most tournaments, and he will want to finally achieve his maiden ATP Tour title after having lost his first 8 finals. However, he meets the No.1 seed in Stefanos Tsitsipas who is looking for his maiden ATP 500 title at the 2022 Rotterdam Open.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Felix Auger-Aliassime have met 7 times before, with Stefanos Tsitsipas leading the head to head 5-2. Their last 5 meetings have been won by Stefanos, but they have mostly been tight encounters. Tsitsipas will be feeling the pressure in terms of this being a good chance for him to lift his maiden ATP 500 title, however, this will mean more to Felix who will be looking to lift his maiden title in general. The bookies are going with Tsitsipas, but I think that an upset is on the cards here and Felix Auger-Aliassime will get his maiden title and shock us at the 2022 Rotterdam Open.
