TennisSection previews the 2021 Cincinnati Open as Hubert Hurkacz takes on Andy Murray in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, August 18th, 2021.
Will Hubert Hurkacz maintain his form? Will Andy Murray back up his solid win? This match will be an interesting one, where we have one of the most in form players on the ATP Tour at the moment facing a legend attempting to make his comeback. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 Cincinnati Open?
Hubert Hurkacz has been playing some great tennis recently, having climbed up to #11 on the ATP rankings after reaching the semifinals of Wimbledon. He recently was playing some exceptional tennis, falling just short of eventual champion Daniil Medvedev. It will be interesting to see how he does against Andy Murray, both of them have relatively similar styles, except Hurkacz is a bigger dude and has more power and aggression, I think Hurkacz will be able to attack him pretty well and take him down in a relatively straightforward match, although he will definitely be posed with challenges from Murray. His match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina was solid, winning in 3 sets while having both the sets he won being very dominant in 6-1 and 6-1. Hubert has been known to be rather inconsistent this year, so it will be interesting to see how he handles the occasion and whether or not he’ll be able to maintain all his shots, mostly his serve and just being able to accurately place his very accurate and quick groundstrokes.
Andy Murray got through in a nice win over Richard Gasquet, a fellow veteran of the ATP Tour himself. He hit some pretty nice shots, and overall stayed pretty consistent, although he definitely had several hiccups, missing out on many break point opportunities and even losing his break in the second set despite recovering it, later on, to close out the match. While he did win, I just don’t find his performance to be convincing enough to be able to take out someone of the current quality of Hubert Hurkacz, he’s just been playing so well, consistently firing his powerful groundstrokes and serves in every corner of the court. Because of this, I think Murray will be overwhelmed by the pure power and it will be tough for him to be able to stay on par in terms of the level that they’ll be playing at from the back of the court, I think it’ll be a really tough match for Andy, but perhaps we can see some magic from Murray to see if he can challenge Hurkacz for a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
Hubert Hurkacz and Andy Murray have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Their styles don’t have a particularly interesting match-up against each other, one just being more aggressive and less mobile, that being Hubert Hurkacz. However, I do believe that Hubert would match up pretty well against Murray, of course, the peak of Andy Murray is much higher than Hubert, however especially at this current stage, I think the power and accuracy of Hurkacz would allow him to attack consistently off any wing, as I expect many short replies on the court from Andy Murray due to his movement and pace not being what it used to be. For Andy to win, I definitely think that Hubert will need to go on one of his inconsistent spurts as we saw earlier in the year, although now with his ranking and confidence I don’t see that happening.
