Filip Krajinovic is in terrific form and will undoubtedly be the overwhelming favorite on Wednesday to defeat Marton Fucsovics at the Rotterdam Open. The Hungarian is only just getting back to action after a disappointing first-round loss at the Australian Open, so an upset in this one is unlikely.
Filip Krajinovic reached the semifinals in Montpellier last week, grinding out a couple of solid wins over Alexei Popyrin and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. But he stood no chance against Alexander Bublik the eventual champion in the last four. Krajinovic though will not be complaining one bit. The Kazakh was simply unplayable during the week in south of France as highlighted with his straight-sets beatdown of Alexander Zverev in the final. Krajinovic is 5-3 for the year and is returning to the Rotterdam Open for the third time in his career. Can he maintain his good run of results indoors?
Filip Krajinovic’s opponent Marton Fucsovics will be making his first appearance in precisely three weeks. Fucsovics had an Australian summer to forget last month. The Hungarian No. 1 player scored just one win from four matches Down Under and was culpable of a below par performance in the first round of the Australian Open where he lost to Dusan Lajovic in five sets. If the 30-year-old does not pick up form pretty fast, his ranking will take a massive hit. He is defending finalist points at the Rotterdam Open from last season, so it is possible he will cascade outside the top 40 should he lose against Serbia’s Krajinovic.
Filip Krajinovic has a dominant 3-0 record over Marton Fucsovics. However, two of those matches were played on the ATP Challenger Tour, while their sole meeting at tour-level came on the hard courts of Cincinatti (New York courts) in 2020. Fucsovics has started the year dismally, but he is a formidable challenge for a first-round match. The Hungarian should be able to bag at least a set here, but the form book cannot be ignored.
