TennisSection previews the 2022 Pune Open as Emil Ruusuvuori (6) will take on Joao Sousa in the Final on Sunday February 6th, 2022.
Sixth seeded Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland will Portuguese face Joao Sousa in the Final of the 2022 Pune Open. The Finnish #1 is seeking to win his first career ATP title while the veteran Sousa is after his fourth, and first on hard courts. Both men have played outstanding tennis to reach this stage and are fully deserving of being here. Who will get the win and get their 2022 seasons off to a flying start?
Emil Ruusuvuori is the sixth seed here at the 2022 Pune Open and is ranked #87 on the ATP Tour. He has stormed through the field here, and is yet to drop a set this week. He has been serving very well, only losing serve three times all week and was able to overcome a tough challenge from Kamil Majchrzak in the Semi-Finas, winning 6-3, 7-6. In this sort of form it is difficult to go against Ruusuvuori, especially since this is his preferred surface. His opponent Joao Sousa has much more experience at this level given that he has already won three tour level tournaments, although this will be his first Final since capturing the title at Estoril in 2018.
Joao Sousa is unseeded this week at the 2022 Pune Open, and is ranked exactly 50 spots behind his opponent Emil Ruusuvuori. The Portuguese veteran is no stranger to ATP Tour Finals, but has not been at his best over the past few seasons. He was made to work in his Semi-Final win over Elias Ymer, defeating the in-form Swede in three sets, coming from a set down and saving three match points in the process. While Ruusuvuori is favored to win here, experience is invaluable in these situations, and Sousa has the major advantage there. It remains to be seen how much he has left in the tank after that grueling Semi-Final but there is no doubt that he will be highly motivated to claim his fourth career title.
This will be the first career meeting between the two players, and I am expecting a fantastic match. Both men have played some of their best tennis in recent memory this week, and this will be a classic case of youth vs experience. Joao Sousa is more of a clay court specialist but he has shown that he is fully capable on this surface, but he will have his hands full here. Emil Ruusuvuori is playing some inspired tennis, and it is very likely that he will win this match and claim his first career title. He has just a little too much firepower for his opponent and while it will likely be a battle and he may lose his first set this week, we expect him to become the 2022 Pune Open champion.
