TennisSection previews the 2022 Montpellier Open as Filip Krajinovic takes on Damir Dzumhur in the quarterfinal on Friday, February 4th, 2022.
Bosnian qualifier Damir Dzumhur is putting together a tremendous run at the Montpellier Open this week. He will face his toughest test yet against the fifth-seeded Filip Krajinovic. Will he produce a giant-killing win and reach his first tour-level semifinal in almost four years?
Filip Krajinovic ensured Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s cameo at the Montpellier Open would be short-lived. But Tsonga exits his home tournament with his head held high after a battling performance. The Frenchman served impeccably and only gave away one break of serve in the match. Unfortunately for him, Krajinovic put on a clinic and was decisive when the opportunity presented itself. He outmuscled Tsonga at times, and used his superior court coverage to run him ragged from the baseline. Ultimately, a 6-4 7-6 win sufficed and keeps Krajinovic’s hopes for an elusive first ATP title alive.
Filip Krajinovic’s next opponent will be the Bosnian qualifier Damir Dzumhur who is looking in fine fettle at the Montpellier Open. The 29-year-old Dzumhur hasn’t put a foot wrong this week, winning his two main draw matches against the odds. He is now unbeaten in his last four matches dating back to the qualifiers this past weekend. Dzumhur got the better of an off-color Nikoloz Basilashvili in his Round of 16 match – a result that should be enough to seal his place inside the world’s top 150 again.
Filip Krajinovic and Damir Dzumhur have not played each other at any level before. They will play officially on the ATP tour at the Montpellier Open on Friday. It has been a fairytale run for the diminutive Bosnian this week as he scaled the qualifying rounds without dropping a set and then made light work of two higher-ranked opponents in the main draw. But with that said, I struggle to envisage a second chapter in the tale for Dzumhur. Krajinovic has depth and accuracy in his game right now and is a more disciplined baseliner than Basilashvili. The Serbian should close out Dzumhur in two sets.
