Australian Open 2022: Lorenzo Sonego vs. Miomir Kecmanovic Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Lorenzo Sonego (25) meets Miomir Kecmanovic in the Third Round on Friday January 21st, 2022.

An exciting match is expected when two young stars collide here at the 2022 Australian Open. Lorenzo Sonego will face Miomir Kecmanovic for a spot in the Fourth Round. Both men have looked to be in strong form here in Melbourne and have a chance to advance to the Fourth Round, an opportunity that likely would not have arisen if Novak Djokovic was not removed from the draw, as he was in their Quarter. Who will take advantage of their good fortune and move on?

Lorenzo Sonego is the 25th seed here at the 2022 Australian Open and is ranked #26 on the ATP Tour. The Italian has realy burst onto the scene and made a name for himself over the past few seasons, and has established himself towards the top of the rankings. He came through the first two rounds relatively comfortably, defeating Sam Querrey in straight sets before needing four to get past Oscar Otte. Sonego has an all-around game that is well-suited to these hard courts, and he is the favorite here against the talented yet inconsistent Miomir Kecmanovic.

Miomir Kevmanovic is unseeded here at the 2022 Australian Open and is ranked 77th in the world. The Serbian is one of the most talented young players in the world, but has had an up and down career so far, struggling to string consistent results together. He has started brightly here at the Open, defeating Salvatore Caruso and the dangerous Tommy Paul without the loss of a set, and his confidence will be very high. His solid baseline game can be a handful, but he will have to limit his unforced errors and serve well to have any chance of victory here over Lorenzo Sonego.

This will be the second career meeting between the two, with Lorenzo Sonego leading the head to head series 1-0. There are many factors that are leading us to back the Italian, such as the head to head, his superior ranking, but most importantly his consistency and experience at the big events. He had an outstanding 2021 season while Miomir Kecmanovic struggled, and there is a gap in quality between the two. Kecmanovic has looked good so far and is talented enough to win a set or two, but expect the Italian to assert his dominance and edge out a tough win here at the 2022 Australian Open, setting up a Round of 16 clash with Cristian Garin.
