TennisSection previews the 2022 Montpellier Open as Filip Krajinovic takes on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round on Wednesday, February 2nd, 2022.
Will Filip Krajinovic get the win? Or will he succumb to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s power when the pair square off at the Montpellier Open? Tsonga is on his last legs, but on home soil, you can bet he will be keen to give the fans something to cheer about.
Filip Krajinovic came through a titanic tussle against the big-serving Aussie Alexei Popyrin in the first round of the Montpellier Open. Krajinovic made a bright start as he broke Popyrin in the third game. The Aussie was clearly struggling for confidence after a slow start to the year Down Under. Although Popyrin managed to retrieve the break back for 5-all, he failed to hold serve in a lengthy game 11. Krajinovic served the set to love this time. The second set followed a similar itinerary, only that a tiebreak would decide matters. Krajinovic’s composure ultimately proved pivotal as Popyrin’s five double faults cost him dearly.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga scored an emotional first-round win over Kacper Zuk on Tuesday. His 6-4 6-4 victory at the Montpellier Open was just his second ATP win since 2019 and his first since March 2021. He hammered seven aces and also won an impressive 90% first-serve points. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has plenty of fond memories at this tournament. He won the event in 2019, and has also reached the semifinal stage three times. Can he find his mojo when he takes on Filip Krajinovic?
Filip Krajinovic leads Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 1-0 in their head-to-head. That match was played at the Davis Cup in 2019 where the Serb won in straight sets. I expect a similar return at the Montpellier Open. Hopes for resurgence are looking grim for Tsonga. After a series of serious injuries in the past two years, he sits outside the world’s top 200. Tsonga will be on double duty on Wednesday. He is scheduled to play the quarterfinals in doubles alongside countryman Fabrice Martin and he could have some success there. But on the singles court, the Serbian should be the heavy favorite in this clash.
