Australian Open 2022: Rafael Nadal vs. Adrian Mannarino Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Rafael Nadal takes on Adrian Mannarino in the fourth round on Sunday, January 23rd, 2022.

Rafael Nadal is showing no mercy at this year’s Australian Open. Can the Spaniard go all the way and win his second title at Melbourne Park? Or will France’s Adrian Mannarino maintain his giant killing run after upsetting the likes of Hubert Hurkacz and Aslan Karatsev?

Rafael Nadal survived his first acid test at this year’s Australian Open after overcoming the 28th seed Karen Khachanov in four sets. The Spaniard was in full control of his third-round match after leading by two sets to love. But a lapse in concentration gave the Russian a route back into the contest and he duly took the third set. Khachanov would find it increasingly difficult to carry that momentum into a fourth set as a fired up Nadal summoned his moxie to seal the match. The Spaniard has reached the quarterfinals or better in 13 of his last 14 trips to the Australian Open, and famously winning the 2009 title with victory over Roger Federer. Can the Spaniard secure his berth in the last eight when he takes on a surprise name in the second week?

Not even the most gnarled tennis fan would have given Adrian Mannarino a fighting chance of reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open. But the French lefty has survived the onslaught, and put the cat amongst the pigeons in each round. He saw off James Duckworth in a thrilling five-setter. And his level would go up a notch from that moment on as he knocked out Poland’s No. 10 seed Hubert Hurkacz in surprising fashion. But the most impressive win yet came in the third round when he went into Iron Man territory against Aslan Karatsev before landing the telling punch. Mannarino shocked last year’s semifinalist in four sets in a match that finished past 2am local time.

Rafael Nadal leads Adrian Mannarino 2-0 in their head-to-head. But the pair of them haven’t squared off since the 2019 Paris Masters. Nadal is unbeaten since the turn of the year. While Mannarino has redefined mission impossible in the first week of the Australian Open taking huge scalps over Hurkacz and Karatsev. It is highly unlikely the Frenchman will recover sufficiently both mentally and physically for another grueling match against one the most physical players in the men’s game. Nadal should roll into the quarters.
