TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Dusan Lajovic faces Benoit Paire in the First Round on Monday August 30th, 2021.
An interesting match awaits us in the First Round of the 2021 US Open as veterans Dusan Lajovic and Benoit Paire do battle. Both men have been relatively inconsistent this year, but the real story is the Frenchman, who has began to turn his career around after months of heading down a troubling path. They are very evenly matched and this has the potential to be a very close encounter. Who will get the win and advance to the Second Round here in New York?
Dusan Lajovic is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked 40 in the ATP world rankings. The Serbian is known as an extremely solid and consistent player who has been a staple in the top 50 over the past few seasons. He was ranked within the top 25 as recently as two years ago, when he won his first ever ATP title in Umag and reaching the Monte-Carlo Open. He has been having a disappointing 2021 season with some uncharacteristically inconsistent results. Despite his higher ranking he probably should be treated as the underdog here against Benoit Paire due to the Frenchman’s recent exploits.
Benoit Paire is one of the most entertaining characters on the ATP Tour, but unfortunately he can be a poor role model at times. The Frenchman has had numerous run-ins with the authorities over his conduct this season which resulted in fines and even his spot in the French Olympic Team being rescinded. However, he is seemingly back to his best now, and has seemed to be enjoying himself on the tour again. After a poor start to the year he has rebounded nicely, and has reached three Quarter-Finals since Wimbledon. Although he is ranked below his opponent Dusan Lajovic, it is hard to call one of them a favorite and this is poised to be a very close and entertaining match in the First Round of the 2021 US Open.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Paire leading the head to head 2-1. This is a very difficult match to predict, due to both men being extremely inconsistent. Lajovic is usually very solid and reliable, but he has not been himself of late while Benoit Paire has recovered from his slow start to the season and seems to be back to his best. Dusan Lajovic is highly experienced but I am going with his opponent Benoit Paire to get the win here. He has enjoyed a remarkable turnaround to his season and is capable of some very good tennis. I expect Lajovic to not go down with a fight, and this could potentially go the distance, but the Frenchman will win here, advancing to the Second Round of the 2021 US Open.
