Will Miomir Kecmanovic be able to show the tennis world that he is a very strong youngster who deserves to be recognised more? Will Fabio Fognini begin his title defence here in Monte-Carlo off to a great start or will he struggle to get out of the gates? Both players can win this one if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Second Round? Who will it be?
Miomir Kecmanovic is a great talent and definitely a Top 20-30 player in the next few years consistently. However, as of recent, Kecmanovic has not been as consistent as he should be if he wants to establish himself as a well-known player on the ATP Tour. In his last two tournaments, Kecmanovic has not been able to get through the Second Round. Miomir has great speed around the court, but he needs to find the balance between going for winners all the time, and playing to stay into the rallies and give himself a chance to wear down his opponents. I expect Miomir to be happy to be back on clay here at the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters as he prefers these conditions, but he will also be very disappointed with the fact he is facing the defending champion in Fabio Fognini in the first round.
Fabio Fognini will be looking to defend his 2019 Monte-Carlo Masters title here, but he will have to ensure his game is up to speed as he has struggled a lot in tournaments as of recent. In his last 3 tournaments, Fognini has lost 3 matches and only won 1. The Italian, when he is at his best, is one of the toughest players to beat and he has beaten some of the best players in the world such as Rafael Nadal multiple times. However, when he is not confident and concentrated, he falters very easily against lower opponents such as Miomir Kecmanovic. You just never really know with Fabio but I am confident that in Monte-Carlo, he will be giving it his all as this is the tournament where he won the biggest title of his career, and when it actually matters, Fabio aims to bring out his best.
Fabio Fognini and Miomir Kecmanovic have never met before, with this being their first encounter on the ATP Tour. Both players are definitely strong opponents who can ruffle each-others’ feathers in these clay-court conditions. However, when it comes down to who I believe will come out here and give it their best from the get go, I will have to go with Fabio Fognini. Fognini has a lot of motivating factors which will push him over the egde, such as his experience, his great game on clay, and his title defence here in Monte-Carlo. I would not be shocked if it was a 3-setter, but it will definitely be won by the Italian Fabio Fognini, booking himself a spot in the Second Round of the 2021 Monte-Carlo Masters.
