Djokovic vs Wawrinka Prediction
We have a clash between two Major champions. Djokovic, the 23-time grand slam winner, takes on Wawrinka, three-time major winner. The Serb is the irrepressible favorite to win a record-tying eighth Wimbledon title this fortnight and he’s been excellent in his opening two rounds, without even needing to shift through the gears. Djokovic’s B+ game has been sufficient to beat the likes of Pedro Cachin and Jordan Thompson to advance into the third round. Djokovic’s win over the Aussie Thompson was significant as it was his 350th at grand slam level, drawing closer to Roger Federer’s 369 record tally.
Wawrinka, for his part, has played his matches on outside courts and he’ll be required to play back-to-back matches after multiple rain interruptions swept through the opening three days at the Championships, thereby causing most matches to be suspended. Nonetheless, the Swiss one-hander has been in brilliant form, dispatching Emil Ruusuvuori and Argentine clay courter Tomas Martin Etchverry with some style. Considering that the 38-year-old didn’t even play a warm-up tournament before Wimbledon makes his progress even more special. He’ll give Djokovic a big test, and I’m fascinated to see how Wawrinka matches with Djokovic’s extraordinary mobility on grass. We know Stan has the firepower to hit through the Djokovic defense even on his worst day, but can he sustain it in four or even five sets? Unlikely. Djokovic is the undisputed King of Center Court and we’re backing the Serbian to chalk another W en route to the second week.
