TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Daniil Medvedev takes on Nick Kyrgios in the second round on Thursday, January 20th, 2022.
Will Nick Kyrgios come out here and put on an incredible show for everyone as he aims to cause the big upset early on? Will Daniil Medvedev be ready for a real tough and unpredictable opponent who could perhaps stop his run to the title at the Australian Open? Both players know each other quite well and always put on entertaining matches against each other, but only one will make their way to the third round. Who will it be?
Nick Kyrgios should be very proud of his return to the court after not having been able to play any warm up tournament before the Australian Open. Nick came out and was using the crowd to his advantage straight away. Hitting 21 aces, only 1 double fault, and winning 81% and 83% off of his first and second serve respectively, this was definitely a great start for Nick. Kyrgios will know that he played well and will only keep improving if he is healthy. However, he meets the heavy favourite for the title here at the 2022 Australian Open as he now meets Daniil Medvedev.
Daniil Medvedev also cruised through his opening round match, beating Henri Laaksonen in straight sets. Medvedev started the match off strongly and as it went along, things got tighter. However, Medvedev was able to hold his nerve and see it through without many major hiccups. Daniil knows he is now the heavy favourite for the title here at the 2022 Australian Open, and he will have been looking at the early matches for all his competitors, seeing that he is probably in the best form. However, with a meeting against Nick Kyrgios, things are never going to be easy for Medvedev who will have to ensure his game and concentration levels are at their best.
Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios have met 2 times before, with Nick Kyrgios leading the head to head 2-0. They met both times in 2019 where Kyrgios won in tight style. Since 2019, Medvedev has become one of the best players in the world and he will be fighting extremely hard to win another grand slam. Nick, on the other hand, has had injury issues and with COVID, he has been limited in his playing time. Although Daniil is ranked 113 spots higher than Nick, this match is not going to be an easy one at the 2022 Australian Open. The crowd, mind games, and trick shots will all play a part in this match, so I think that Nick has a chance to keep things close. However, with limited playing time, just coming off of having COVID, I think that Medvedev will still edge his way through this match at the Australian Open.
