TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Roberto Bautista Agut (8) meets Dominik Koepfer in the Third Round on Friday July 2nd, 2021.
Eighth seeded Roberto Bautista Agut is one of the most consistent performers on the ATP Tour, and has been quietly moving through the draw here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Never a flashy player, he does the job very inconspicuously and tends to creep up on you. Next up in his path is the unseeded German Dominik Koepfer, who is also putting together a solid showing here at Wimbledon. Can he cause the upset here? Or will the world number 10 RBA continue to progress as expected?
Roberto Bautista Agut is the eighth seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and is currently ranked #10 on the ATP Tour. The Spaniard has built a reputation of being one of the hardest workers on the tour, and is a very consistent performer. While he considers grass his least favorite surface, the Spaniard does have one title on grass and his attitude and powerful flat groundstrokes make him a strong opponent regardless of the surface. RBA also reached the Semis the last time this event was held back in 2019 and will be confident on these familiar courts. RBA has had a tough time here at Wimbledon so far, defeating John Millman in four close sets before winning a five set thriller over Miomir Kecmanovic. While he is an extremely fit player, those matches would have taken a toll, opening a small window for next opponent Dominik Koepfer.
Dominik Koepfer is unseeded here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and is currently ranked #62 in the ATP world rankings. The German has been in solid for here at the championships, stunning the big-serving Reilly Opelka in straight sets in one of the upsets of the tournament thus far. It was even more remarkable when you consider that it was only the second grass-court win of the German’s career. He then followed it up with a tough five set win over Soon-Woo Kwon to reach the Third Round here at Wimbledon for the first time. Even though he is the massive underdog against world number 10 Roberto Bautista Agut, he has been playing some solid tennis and will think that he has a chance. This will be a tough ask against the solid Spaniard, but the win over Opelka raised some eyebrows and he Koepfer will be confident here.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with the Spaniard leading the head to head 1-0. They faced each other last year in Hamburg, with Bautista Agut winning a close three-setter. This match has the potential to be just as close, with RBA struggling a bit and the Dominik Koepfer playing some career-best tennis on the grass here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Despite his struggles however, I still see RBA getting the win here. His big-match experience will be huge here, and he does have a much better grass-court pedigree than his performances have shown so far. Koepfer will put up a massive fight and will almost certainly win a set, but I see the Spaniard winning here, advancing to the Round of 16 for the second straight year.
