Indian Wells 2022: Rafael Nadal vs. Taylor Fritz Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the Indian Wells 2022 as Rafael Nadal takes on Taylor Fritz in the final on Sunday, March 20th, 2022.

Will Rafael Nadal win a record-tying masters 1000? Will Taylor Fritz somehow win his first? This will be a very fascinating one, where the best player of the season and an all-time great takes on the young and on fire home favorite. Who will triumph and win Indian Wells 2022?

Rafael Nadal fought hard all week, but he didn’t have to fight as hard as he did against Carlos Alcaraz. It was brutal conditions in the match, with Nadal having a 6/21 break point conversion rate, having to break serve time and time again as holding was so difficult in the wind. When conditions calmed down though, Nadal stepped up to the line, not like we’ve seen so far in this tournament though, a much higher level in which he played some incredible aggressive tennis keeping Alcaraz on his feet and not allowing him to dictate play. I think he will be able to do this perfectly coming up against Taylor Fritz. Fritz will have the crowd behind him, at least a little bit more, he has a massive serve, and Nadal has been struggling all tournament, but his level in the semifinals definitely makes him the clear favorite to win big at Indian Wells 2022.

Taylor Fritz got an impressive win, pulling off the upset on Andrey Rublev, taking him down in straight sets to become the first American to make the final in 10 years. An American has not lifted the trophy in 21 years, and Fritz is looking to break that streak, but he has one of the hardest tests in tennis history having to face the great Rafael Nadal in the finals. To win, I think he needs a lot of luck. There’s been times where Nadal hasn’t been feeling well this tournament, but he needed to raise his level for Alcaraz and he did, so I definitely don’t see him falling so far behind that he can’t win the match. Fritz actually does have a pretty good game for Nadal as he serves really big and just crushes the ball from the baseline. Can Fritz handle the versatility of Rafa though? Can he attack Rafa’s tricky serves, can he win the longer rallies where Nadal pulls off the impossible. The short answer is no, Fritz simply doesn’t have what it takes at the moment to challenge a guy like Nadal, and while I do think he can fight, the title looks all but for Nadal on Sunday at Indian Wells 2022.

Rafael Nadal and Taylor Fritz have met once before, with Rafael Nadal leading the head to head 1-0. Nadal beat him easily the one time they met in Acapulco, coincidentally in a final as well, winning very easily 6-3 6-2. Acapulco is incredibly slow, so I definitely expect a similar pattern of play for Nadal where he moves the forehand around the court and doesn’t really let Fritz jump on the ball. Nadal’s retrieval skills are obviously off the chart, so while Fritz has the firepower to do some damage, ultimately the skill and class of the 21 grand slam champion will be too much as Nadal aims to extend his match winning streak to his lucky number of 21 with the championship at Indian Wells 2022.
