TennisSection previews the 2022 Miami Open as Gael Monfils takes on Francisco Cerundolo in the third round on Sunday, March 27th, 2022.
Playing in the Miami Open for the first time since 2016, Gael Monfils is looking to make up for his absence in previous years. The Frenchman is likely to navigate his section of the draw without resistance up until the quarterfinals. But will Franciso Cerundolo defy the odds and potentially book a meeting against his younger brother Juan Manuel in the fourth round?
Gael Monfils has been unfortunate with playing time at the Miami Open. He has missed the last six editions of this tournament, either through injury, rehabilitation or due to the Covid 19 pandemic. And his second round match was going to be a rollercoaster of emotions on his return. Monfils came through a very tricky opponent in Oscar Otte, beating him 7-6 6-1, in a match the French veteran did not look remotely close to losing. He will now play a man who has overcome the odds to advance into the third round of the Miami Open.
Francisco Cerundolo is making his main draw debut at the Miami Open this week. And the Argentinean clay-court specialist has not wasted his chance of making an imprint at the second Masters 1000 tournament of the season. Victory over Tallon Grieksppor was certainly historic and invaluable for his confidence. And then he went and solved the Reilly Opelka serve challenge, albeit via a retirement after the American was forced to call it quits due to a right shoulder injury. Up until then, Cerundolo led by a set and a break.
Gael Monfils and Francisco Cerundolo have not played each on the ATP Tour. Sunday’s match at the Miami Open will be their first official meeting. I’d be shocked if there is any another result here. Monfils is the superior player with an incredible athletic ability that makes him a hard court expert. Cerundolo has done fantastically well to get to this stage, with a pair of confidence-boosting wins. But it is hard to look past the Frenchman.
