The defense of Casper Ruud will come up against the offense of Alexander Bublik in what should be an entertaining third-round match at the Miami Open. Who will come out on top in this clash of styles?
Casper Ruud produced one of the most assured displays of the week as he dismantled Swiss’s late entrant Henri Laaksonen 6-1 6-2, taking just 50 minutes – the shortest match at the tournament so far. The gulf in both ranking and class was evident from the first ball as the Norwegian World No. 8 used his mammoth top spin and sharp angles to keep Laaksonen grounded. The first set took just 21 minutes as Ruud landed an impressive 84% first serves. He continued in a similar vein in the second, wrapping it up in half an hour and picking up his first main draw win at the Miami Open.
There was a mix of brilliance and disaster in Alexander Bulbik’s second-round win at the Miami Open. The number 30th seed from Kazakhstan rallied from a set down to avoid the upset against Colombian journeyman Daniel Elahi Galan. Bublik hit a whopping 13 double faults and was broken four times. But he still managed to claw his way into the contest and won, hitting 11 aces and recording 79% first-serve points won. Bublik will be keen to repeat last year’s exploits at this tournament when he made the quarterfinals, but he has tall order to accomplish that feat.
Casper Ruud leads Alexander Bublik 3-1 in their head-to-head. Bublik stunned Ruud in a Davis Cup singles rubber a few weeks ago, handing Kazakhstan a fabulous win over Norway in the tie. Ruud, however, arrived at the team tournament shortly after recovering from an abdominal injury that ruled him out from a pair of clay court tournaments in South America. So, he could have had some residual pain going to the Davis Cup. He is operating at full fitness levels now, and I expect his disciplined game to wear down an inconsistent Bublik in this one.
